Job Purpose
The Engineer – Shot Blasting & Paint Shop is responsible for supervising surface preparation and painting activities for batching plant components. This includes operating and maintaining shot blasting machines, monitoring primer and finish paint application, ensuring quality and safety compliance, and maintaining productivity across paint booths and drying areas.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation & Painting Operations:
... - Supervise shot blasting operations to ensure effective surface treatment prior to painting.
- Oversee primer application, painting (airless spray or conventional), and drying/curing as per paint process specifications.
- Maintain records of paint usage, DFT (Dry Film Thickness), and rework instances.
- Ensure correct masking, surface cleaning, and use of approved consumables and paint codes.
Process Control & Quality:
- Conduct in-process checks for surface finish, coverage, and paint thickness using gauges (e.g., Elcometer).
- Ensure paint finish meets required adhesion, gloss, and corrosion protection standards.
- Coordinate with QA for final inspection and handling of NCRs related to paint defects.
- Monitor compliance to ISO/IS standards for painting and surface preparation.
Maintenance & Shop Supervision:
- Monitor upkeep and routine maintenance of shot blasting machines, compressors, and spray equipment.
- Schedule cleaning of booths, ducts, and ensure adequate ventilation and safety inside cabins.
- Maintain inventory of paints, thinners, PPE, and ensure safe storage as per MSDS guidelines.
- Supervise paint booth helpers and ensure adherence to daily schedules and shift targets.
Safety & Environmental Compliance:
- Enforce use of PPE (e.g., masks, coveralls, eye protection) for all workers in blasting and painting zones.
- Ensure compliance with VOC and emissions guidelines as per statutory norms.
- Conduct regular safety talks and hazard identification within paint and blasting areas.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Paint Technology
Experience:
Minimum 3 years in shot blasting and industrial painting in heavy engineering / capital equipment industry
Certifications / Licenses (Preferred):
- Training in industrial coating systems (e.g. SSPC, NACE Level 1 desirable)
- Knowledge of ISO 12944 paint systems and corrosion protection standards
Special Skills:
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot shot blasting and airless spray equipment
- Familiarity with paint mixing, viscosity control, and DFT measurement
- Understanding of surface profile and preparation grades (e.g., SA2.5)
- Proficiency in report/log sheet maintenance and paint traceability
