Job Title Shift Incharge - Operations
Department Operations
Reporting To HOD - Operations
Level / Grade Shift Supervisory / Officer
Location Khopoli, Raigad District, Maharashtra
Ideal Experience Minimum 8 Years
Shift Requirement Rotational shifts (3-shift pattern) - non-negotiable
Why This Role Matters
...
The shift incharge is the owner of the entire plant flow during their shift - not just the lines. They run
production across pickling, rolling, annealing, skin pass, slitting and CTL; and they also own material
movement on shift: RM unloading and receipt posting, WIP staging with FIFO, FG dispatch loading,
and same-shift ERP entries. A weak
JOB PURPOSE
To execute shift production targets across all active process lines and to run shift-level material flow
from gate-in to gate-out: operator deployment, line speed optimisation, delay tracking, yield
monitoring, SOP enforcement, quality at source, RM receipt, WIP movement, dispatch loading per the
daily plan, coil tracking, and smooth shift handover. Accountable for converting the daily plan into
tonnage and dispatched vehicles with minimum waste, full data discipline and zero safety incidents.
SECTION 3 - KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Production on Shift
* Achieve shift production targets per active line; track hourly output and correct course when falling behind.
* Deploy operators across lines; manage absenteeism and ensure every running line has adequate manning.
* Optimise line speeds within SOP limits; reduce speed only when justified by quality or equipment concerns - and record why.
* Track and categorise shift delays precisely: mechanical, electrical, quality hold, RM shortage, changeover, operator error, other.
* Monitor yield and scrap per line; flag abnormal loss (trimming, crop ends, edge cracks, surface downgrades) immediately.
* Enforce SOPs on every line and quality at source: operators check and log parameters; first-line quality is production's job.
* Run annealing operations on shift: furnace loading/unloading, cycle monitoring, atmosphere checks, batch composition.
Material Flow & Dispatch on Shift
* Supervise RM inward on shift: unloading, weighment verification against documents, damage check, storage location, same-shift receipt posting in ERP.
* Execute the dispatch plan on shift: FG retrieval, loading sequence, strapping/packing check, weighment, documentation handover; escalate any vehicle waiting beyond norm.
* Night shift focus: FG staging, packing completion and document preparation so day-shift loading starts at full speed (loading concentrated in day/evening shifts unless HOD directs otherwise).
* Maintain WIP staging and FIFO discipline between stages; no coil moves without its tag and ERP movement entry in the same shift.
* Manage crane allocation between production and loading - production feed and vehicle TAT are both shift KPIs; conflicts are resolved by the daily plan, not by whoever shouts loudest.
* Keep yard and warehouse housekeeping: safe stacking, clear aisles, damage prevention.
Shift Governance
* Conduct the shift-start meeting: targets, priorities, quality focus, dispatch plan, safety points,
process changes.
* Maintain safety and housekeeping: PPE compliance, crane safety, hot material handling, 5S.
* Prepare the shift report within 15 minutes of shift end: output per line, delays, yield, non-prime,
vehicles loaded, RM received, safety observations, handover items.
* Execute a walked handover: running conditions, pending issues, equipment status, vehicles in
plant, material in staging.
* Coordinate with maintenance on breakdowns; balance repair urgency with safe restart. Escalate
to HOD when shift targets are at risk.
MUST-HAVE CANDIDATE PROFILE
* Experience: 8 years minimum in flat steel / cold rolling / strip processing production, with 3-5
years running shifts with accountability. Exposure to dispatch loading or material handling
supervision is strongly preferred.
* Industry Exposure: Cold rolling, flat steel, coil/strip processing. Must have operated or supervised
at least one major process line (rolling, pickling, annealing or finishing). Single-line slitting/CTL
acceptable only with upstream experience.
* Education: Diploma or B.E./B.Tech Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering.
* Technical Skills: Cold rolling operations, pickling, annealing cycles, skin pass, at least one
finishing process; how parameters affect quality. Working knowledge of coil handling, loading and
lashing safety.
* Software / ERP: Logs production, material movement and dispatch entries in ERP on shift. Fills
shift reports. Basic Excel.
* Shift Readiness: Rotational 3-shift pattern. Non-negotiable.
* Leadership: Manages 15-30 people on shift: line operators plus dispatch/yard crew. Enforces
discipline and maintains authority on the floor.
* Communication: Hindi/Marathi with operators and drivers; basic English for reports.
