Job SummaryThe Assistant Manager - Purchase will oversee direct material procurement, inventory optimization, supplier management, and cross-functional planning to support continuous production operations. This role is key to maintaining seamless supply chain flow, optimizing procurement costs, driving value engineering, and ensuring strict compliance with operational standards and quality benchmarks.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic & Operational Procurement
Manage the procurement of direct materials in line with production schedules, customer demand, and material requirements planning (MRP).
Timely release and tracking of Purchase Orders (POs) based on operational requirements.
Monitor supplier confirmations and ensure strict adherence to committed delivery timelines.
Oversee procurement activities involving local external suppliers, global vendors, and inter-company trading operations.
Inventory & Material Management
Maintain optimal inventory levels to prevent stock-outs while minimizing holding costs and avoiding excess inventory.
Proactively drive initiatives to identify, manage, and reduce excess and obsolete inventory.
Expedite critical supplies and resolve material shortages to ensure uninterrupted production workflows.
Supplier Relationship & Performance Management
Build and sustain strong, reliable relationships with key vendors and material suppliers.
Coordinate supplier development and performance evaluation initiatives to enhance vendor quality, capacity, and overall delivery reliability.
Manage supplier-related issues, implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and address delivery risks.
Cost Optimization & S&OP Collaboration
Identify strategic cost-reduction opportunities, localization possibilities, and value-engineering initiatives.
Collaborate closely with Logistics and Import/Export teams to optimize freight, duties, and landed material costs.
Actively participate in Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) reviews and contribute actionable insights to improve planning accuracy and procurement workflows.
Process, ERP & Compliance Management
Maintain accurate supplier master data, purchasing contracts, and transactional records in the ERP system (SAP preferred).
Oversee open Purchase Order tracking, inventory reporting, and continuous Management Information System (MIS) documentation for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Coordinate daily with cross-functional teams including Production Planning, Stores, Quality Assurance, and Engineering.
Ensure all purchasing operations comply fully with internal company policies, statutory regulations, and international trade compliance standards.
Educational Qualifications
Degree: Bachelor's Degree (B.E. / B.Tech / B.Com / BBA / BMS) or a specialized Bachelor's / Master's Degree (MBA) in Supply Chain Management or Logistics Management.
Engineering Specialization: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Industrial Engineering background preferred.
Experience
Experience Required: 7.5 to 8 years of hands-on experience in direct material procurement within a manufacturing setup.
Core Competencies & Skills
Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and hands-on operational experience with ERP systems (SAP MM module preferred) for purchasing, inventory tracking, and MIS reporting.
Problem-Solving: Analytical capability to resolve complex supply chain bottlenecks, inventory risks, and vendor performance issues systematically.
Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills in English to negotiate effectively with vendors, write management reports, and coordinate across departmental lines.
