The DFMEA Engineer facilitates and owns the Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis process from early concept development through design freeze. This role ensures cross-functional engineering teams systematically identify design risks, evaluate failure severity, and establish mitigation actions to guarantee product safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
FMEA Facilitation & Ownership: Lead cross-functional DFMEA workshops with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and systems engineers.
System Breakdown & Functional Analysis: Develop Block Diagrams, Boundary Diagrams (B-Diagrams), and Parameter Diagrams (P-Diagrams) to establish clear system functions and interfaces.
Risk Assessment & Scoring: Apply AIAG & VDA guidelines to evaluate design risks using Severity ($S$), Occurrence ($O$), and Detection ($D$) metrics and Action Priority (AP) logic.
Mitigation & Verification: Track recommended actions, coordinate with Design Verification & Testing (DVT) teams to update test plans, and verify risk reduction post-testing.
Cross-Functional Integration: Serve as the technical bridge between DFMEA (product design) and PFMEA (manufacturing process design) to transfer critical design characteristics.
Compliance & Audits: Maintain live DFMEA documentation for audits (e.g., ISO 26262, ISO 14971, IATF 16949).
Candidate Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Reliability Engineering.
Experience: 3-7+ years of hands-on experience in product design, reliability testing, or failure analysis.
