Purpose:

Operation and maintenance of power plant reliably.

Job Summary:

The Power Plant Operator is responsible for monitoring, controlling, and maintaining the Gas genset and its systems used to generate and distribute electrical power.

This role is critical to ensuring a stable and reliable supply of electricity to the client / grid while adhering to strict safety and environmental regulations. Power Plant Operators work to operate power plant but also conduct routine inspections and perform maintenance tasks throughout the plant.

Job Accountabilities / Key Responsibilities.

• Operation and Control:

  • Monitor and control the operation of power plant (MWM / CAT / GEJ Gas Gensets), and its auxiliary systems, using control & power panel, radiator, cooling towers, ventilation system, gas system etc.

  • Adjust controls to regulate power output, voltage, frequency, and electricity flow to meet fluctuating client's requirement.

  • Initiate start-up and shutdown procedures for plant equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Operate and maintain auxiliary equipment such as control / power panels, pumps, fans, ventilations systems, cooling towers, radiator, etc.

• Monitoring and Troubleshooting:

  • Continuously observe HMI, measuring instruments to see that plant is operating within limit.

  • Detect and analyse equipment malfunctions, abnormal conditions, or operational problems.

  • Implement corrective actions promptly to resolve issues, prevent outages, and ensure continuous operation.

  • Collaborate with maintenance personnel and engineers to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems.

• Maintenance and Inspections:

  • Perform routine inspections, checks, and preventative maintenance tasks on plant machinery and equipment (e.g., cleaning, lubricating, minor repairs).

  • Identify and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisors and maintenance teams.

  • Collect samples (e.g., oil, water) for laboratory analysis.

• Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, procedures, and occupational health regulations.

  • Respond effectively and efficiently to alarms and emergencies such as equipment failures, power outages, and other incidents, taking appropriate actions to protect personnel, plant assets, and the environment.

  • Ensure the power plant operates within all environmental regulations, minimizing emissions and waste.

  • Participate in regular safety drills and training programs.

• Record-Keeping and Communication:

  • Maintain detailed logs and records of equipment readings, operational data, maintenance activities, and any incidents that occur during shifts.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with other operators, supervisors, engineers, and maintenance personnel to coordinate activities, relay information, and ensure smooth operations.

  • Prepare reports on plant performance, maintenance activities, and compliance metrics.

• Teamwork:

  • Work effectively as part of a team, often in a rotating shift schedule (including nights, weekends, and holidays) to ensure 24/7 operation of the power plant.

Key Competencies.

• Education:

  • ITI / Diploma in electrical or mechanical or equivalent is typically required.

• Experience:

  • Proven experience in power generation, preferably MWM gas gensets with generation voltage of 415 / 11 kV.

  • Extensive on-the-job training is a critical component of becoming a fully qualified operator.

• Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of gas gensets principles and systems (e.g., operating limits, faults, alarms, power & control diagrams, etc.)

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of electricity basics, including voltage, current, and frequency.

  • Motor connections, troubleshooting breaker functions, pumps and blower repairing.

• Soft Skills:

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in monitoring equipment and recording data.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly identify and troubleshoot operational issues and implement solutions.

  • Decision-Making: Capacity to make sound judgments under pressure, especially during emergencies.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting and team collaboration.

  • Adaptability/Flexibility: Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Safety-Conscious: Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.

  • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and other plant personnel.

  • Concentration: Ability to focus on tasks without distraction for extended periods.
