The state of Maharashtra is the one of the wealthiest in the country. In 2017-18, its gross state domestic product (GSDP) accounted for almost 15% of the country’s, the highest among all states. Its capital, Mumbai, is the commercial capital of India and is a globally famous financial hub. During 2000-2018, cumulative FDI inflows in the state stood at US$ 118.13 billion.

To promote trade and industry in Maharashtra, the state government is developing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for IT/ITES, pharmaceuticals, textile, automotive, biotechnology, etc. Currently, the state has 29 operational SEZs, of which a majority lies in the IT/ITES, engineering, and electronics sectors. To provide world-class infrastructural components for the textile sector, the state is also building a number of textile parks. As a part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Maharashtra’s government is working on an electronics policy for corporations that are interested in investing in the sector.
