Jobs in Plastic Industry

With the commencement of polystyrene production in 1957, India made a promising start in the plastic industry. Today the sector comprises of about 22,000 plastic processing units, 85-90% of which are small and medium-sized enterprises. About four million people are now employed in various jobs in the plastic industry.

The Indian plastic industry manufactures and exports a wide range of raw materials, polyester films, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plastic moulded extruded goods, moulded luggage items, tarpaulins, electrical appliances and accessories, and various other consumer goods. Availability of raw materials drives the sector’s steady growth. Polypropylene, high-density and low-density polyethylene and other such raw materials are produced domestically.  Aided by a great number of polymer producers and plastic process machinery and mould manufacturers, the plastic industry has shown remarkable developments in infrastructure, capacity, and a skilled workforce.

Plastic products contribute around 1% to the country’s overall export. India’s export of plastic products increased by 17.1% to USD 8.85 billion in 2017-2018 as compared to USD 7.56 billion in 2016-17. Plastic raw materials export accounted for USD 3.24 billion in 2017-2018. Among the major importers of plastics from India, exports to the US were about USD 1.11 billion, the highest among all. The other chief importers include China (USD 728.31 million), UAE (USD 440.81 million), Italy (USD 403.94 million), Germany (USD 367.02 million), Turkey (USD 334.18 million), UK (USD 318.25 million), Bangladesh (USD 257.14 million), and Nepal (USD 205.82 million). As per recent developments, the Indian government will invest USD 6.2 million for the development of 18 plastic plants in order to enhance the domestic plastic production and generate more jobs in the plastic industry.

With increasing cut-throat competitions in the global market and the constant push to uplift our living standards, the scope of plastics is bound to keep on escalating. The Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL) comprising of large, medium, and small scale manufacturers and exporters is the apex governmental organization responsible for controlling exports of plastic products. PLEXCONCIL is undertaking various promotional and need-based activities in India as well as overseas to spearhead the country’s plastic production and export as well as boost the number of jobs in the plastic industry.
