India’s civil aviation industry is among the fastest growing in the country and is expected to become the largest in the next decade. It has emerged to be the third largest domestic aviation market across the globe and could be the third largest air passenger market by 2025, overtaking the United Kingdom.

India is expected to have 480 million flyers both domestic and international by 2036, which will overtake the number of flyers in Japan (225 million) and Germany (200 million) combined. The total passenger traffic was almost 265 million in the fiscal year 2017, with a growth of 18.5% from the previous fiscal year. Domestic and International passenger traffic in India was 141.77 million between April and August 2018, of which 113.44 million was domestic passenger traffic. There are nearly 560 aircraft in operation in India as of May 2018.

Seeing this growth rate, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) that the aviation sector attracted between April 2000 and June 2018 reached USD 1658.23 million. The FDI investment is expected to skyrocket to INR 1 Lac Crore in the coming five years. The Government of India is expecting to invest a large sum of USD 1.83 billion for airport infrastructure development and aviation services in the next eight to ten years. As per reports, some of the key investments in the aviation industry in India include USD 2.32billion investment by AAI in the fiscal year 2018-19 to expand the already existing terminals and also to construct fifteen new ones. The Government has signed an open sky agreement in June 2018 with Australia to allow airlines on both sides to offer endless seats to Australian and six Indian metro cities. Furthermore, AAI also plans to invest in making Guwahati an inter-regional hub and Imphal, Agartala, and Dibrugarh intra-regional hubs.

India is headed to become the third largest domestic aviation market and is making huge investments to achieve the goal. The growth in the industry will translate to an increasing number of well-paying airlines jobs for skilled candidates.
